5 key aspects of music videos
Thought beats –seeing the sound - pace of the video – shows the pace of the
song
Narrative and performance – storyline – related to the
lyrics – going to reflect the narrative
Performance- shows the artist, dancers, people, fans
The Star image – the look of the artist- representation of
the artist in a specific way. Body language, clothes etc - what they are known by – an image – eg Elvis,
Relations of visuals to song
Technical aspects of music videos
Songs fail to give us the whole narrative- we get the gist
of the meaning but then we tend to make up our own idea of what is being told.
MVs should have coherent repeatability. Narrative abd
performance work hand in hand – makes it easier for the audience to watch over
and over m without losing interest
Lip sync and other mimed actions remains the heart of the
music
RELATIONS TO VISUALS OF SONG
ILLUSTRATE m- images to illustrate the meaning
AMPLIFY - makes it
bigger, louder
DISJUNCTURE - this is
where the meaning of the song is completely ignored. – random shit in the video
– clashes with the song completely. But is effective – but hard to do successfully
Lady Gaga – Just Dance
“ Just Dance” is Lady Gaga’s first music video. Because of
this she has to establish her image and type of music to the world.
The video is of her entering a house with people sleeping
after partying the night before, she then starts up the party again.
The video portrays her as someone who enjoys to party in a
crazy manner, is energetic. Her clothing and behaviour makes her stand out
and becomes her star image. She keeps
this image in later videos, making them more crazier
Narrative and performance
Lip syncing - looking at the camera,
she also shows a narrative of her past and struggles, and she is telling her story from her own point of veiw
